The story

A dog chapel on a Vermont hilltop, its walls pinned with visitors' notes and photographs, is the centre of Dog Mountain. The property in St. Johnsbury covers 150 acres, and Vermont Public described it in August 2025 as a place where visitors come to celebrate the bond between dogs and people.
Stephen Huneck, a carver known for dog art, and his wife Gwen bought the land in 1995. According to the Dog Mountain website, they turned the barn into studio space and the Dog Chapel followed; it opened over Memorial Day weekend in 2000. Huneck wrote that he had been gravely ill and in a coma and that, during his recovery, he conceived a ritual space for grieving a lost dog. He wanted it built in the style of an 1820s Vermont church, and titled his book about it The Dog Chapel: Welcome, All Creeds, All Breeds, No Dogmas Allowed. The chapel is filled with notes and photos left by visitors; the gallery manager told Vermont Public that Dog Mountain is "really a pilgrimage place and a sanctuary".
