FIELD GUIDE

The story

A coyote about 20 feet tall now stands beside Grant Road, a major Tucson corridor, installed as the public art for the Grant Road Phase 3 to 4 improvements, which include a flood-control basin. Dodger is the work of Tucson artist Joseph O'Connell and his studio, Creative Machines. It sits at the southeast corner of Grant Road and Dodge Boulevard, inside a retention basin built to hold storm runoff during the monsoon season. KGUN 9 reported its arrival in April 2026 and described it as painted red.
O'Connell explained his choice in a written Q&A published by the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona in April 2024. Coyotes, he said, were being seen around town even in daytime, and they combine "playful, vaguely threatening, light on their feet, clever" qualities. He proposed a tall form so that it would be visible to drivers on Grant Road yet still reward a closer look. He also said that placing the work in the basin would let the City add paths, lighting and benches and turn it into a pocket park.
