FIELD GUIDE
The story
A 25-foot stainless-steel Jesus now stands in Divine Mercy Park on Davidson Road in Kansas City, Missouri, after a short tour of the city: a stadium, then land beside Interstate 35, then its present site. It is the work of Sturgis, South Dakota, sculptor Dale Lamphere. The City of Fountains Foundation lists it as weighing 4 tons on an 8.5-foot concrete base, with a lightning rod built in.
The Divine Mercy site said in 2008 that the figure is based on the image of Jesus as he appeared to St Faustina in the 1930s, which the site describes with a raised right hand in blessing and two rays from the heart. Its public debut was on 25 May 2008 at Kauffman Stadium, where The Catholic Key and the foundation record the Eucharistic Family Rosary Crusade; a 2010 Catholic Key report calls the gathering the Global Living Rosary. The Divine Mercy site reported that it was then raised beside Interstate 35, where the Kansas City Star ran the headline "Steel statue of Christ causing a stir" in August 2008. The foundation and The Catholic Key date its move to Divine Mercy Park to November 2008, and Bishop Robert W. Finn dedicated the statue and park on 11 September 2010 before about 150 people.
