The story

In January 2023 the Dallas Morning News described a giant cowboy hat on a pedestal in the middle of Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth: covered in thousands of small mirrors, 16 feet long, about 6 feet tall and 12 feet wide, and weighing about half a ton. Sundance Square commissioned it from Alvin-based fabrication studio Smash Design, which shaped it from a 3D model into the type of hat worn by Ed Bass, whom the paper identified as chairman of the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. Smash Design describes the sculpture as carved from high-density foam with a hardcoat finish. It had no official name; a TikTok user called it a "disco cowboy hat". It was first shown for the New Year's Eve celebration, and the Dallas Morning News reported in January 2023 that it was due to stay at least until the Stock Show and Rodeo ended on 4 February 2023. Sundance Square's chief security officer compared it to Chicago's Cloud Gate. A November 2025 Amazing America segment, carried by KTUL, described a 16-foot-long cowboy hat at Sundance Square as open for viewing 24 hours a day and dog-friendly. The sculpture's maker, Smash Design, says the hat was not meant to be permanent but became a permanent attraction and was popular during the 2026 FIFA World Cup festivities.
