The story
The Cunnamulla Fella existed as a song for forty years before anybody built him.
Stan Coster wrote the character and Slim Dusty made him famous – a ringer down from the Warrego, cocky, footloose and entirely at ease with himself, in one of the most quoted pieces of Australian country music. He is a type rather than a person, and the town he is named for eventually decided a type was worth a statue.
The bronze stands at double life size in front of the Paroo Shire Hall. Archie Sinclair sculpted it from an original drawing by Mike Nicholas, and it was officially unveiled on 18 November 2005.
That provenance involves a two-stage translation. Nicholas drew the figure; Sinclair rendered the drawing in three dimensions at twice human size. The result is a statue of a fictional character derived from a lyric, which is an unusual thing to put outside council chambers – most civic bronzes commemorate somebody who existed.
Cunnamulla sits on the Warrego River in far south-west Queensland, and the song places its subject precisely there, which gives the town an uncontestable claim. No other place can put up the Cunnamulla Fella.
The statue has become the anchor of the town's identity and its annual festival, and it does something the song alone cannot: it gives visitors a fixed point to stand beside. A lyric cannot be photographed. Double life-size bronze can.
There is a wider point in that. Country music has given several Australian towns their public identity more effectively than any industry did, and Cunnamulla is the clearest case: a song, a character, a statue, a festival, in that order.

ACCESS
Navigate to the Cunnamulla Fella / Paroo Shire Hall at 3 Jane Street. The statue stands in front of the hall. Queensland tourism lists car and coach parking for the attraction; the stored point is the statue/hall destination, not a surveyed parking bay and not the separate Visitor Information Centre in Centenary Park.
