FIELD GUIDE

The story

The Crystal Shrine Grotto is a man-made cave of concrete and quartz built inside a working Memphis cemetery. According to Memorial Park Funeral Home & Cemetery, the cemetery's founder, E. Clovis Hinds, met the Mexican artist Dionicio Rodriguez in February 1935, and over the next eight years the two produced a group of concrete sculptures that includes the grotto. The cemetery says Hinds described it as “the only man-made crystal cave in the world”.
Rodriguez worked in what the cemetery calls el trabajo rustic, shaping cement over a steel and copper frame so it looks like wood or stone. The cemetery says he guarded his colouring formulas closely, soaking the labels off his jars and breaking them when they were empty. Elsewhere in the grounds, Abraham’s Oak, near the grotto entrance, is a hollow concrete tree 15 feet tall and nine feet across, large enough to walk through, with benches inside.
