FIELD GUIDE
The story
The whole hotel is the crocodile. Not a sculpture attached to a building – the building itself, laid out in the shape of a saltwater crocodile, with guests sleeping inside it.
The Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel at Jabiru is Indigenous-owned, and Parks Australia describes it as uniquely shaped to represent the saltwater crocodile. Guests enter through the mouth. The rooms occupy the body, and the plan reads unmistakably as the animal from the air – which is the only place the shape is fully legible, and is presumably why it looks the way it does on approach by light aircraft.
