FIELD GUIDE
The story
A row of Coyote figures in steel stands beside the Missoula Art Museum, and, Ambrose-Smith said, the one nearest the entrance raises both arms in a Salish gesture of welcome. The Missoulian called the 22-foot sculpture the tallest piece of public art in downtown Missoula when it was unveiled in late October 2025.
Its Salish title, Es wičms č̓ es mlk̓ʷmulexʷ t snč̓l̓ep, translates as Coyote is Seeing All of the Land. The work was among the last major projects of Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, a contemporary artist and member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, who died in January 2025 aged 85. Her son Neal Ambrose-Smith, who collaborated with her, told the unveiling crowd of about a hundred that it had been her dream for more than two decades.
