The story

A 42-foot hot dog with a bun sits beside Roark Creek along the highway in the Colorado town of Bailey, Colorado, and it has been moved twice. Explore Park County says the building weighs about 18 tons and first opened in 1966 on West Colfax Avenue in Denver. City Cast Denver reports that original owner Marcus Shannon dreamed of a national chain, but the company quickly went bankrupt; Explore Park County says the Colfax stand closed in 1969. It was hauled up Highway 285 to Aspen Park, near Conifer, in 1970 and stayed there until 2006, when it was moved again to make way for a bank, this time to Bailey. Explore Park County reported in September 2022 that it had been shut for most of the pandemic and reopened at the end of August that year with a fresh coat of paint. Westword reported in May 2023 that it had changed management again and reopened for Memorial Day weekend. The building later reached a wider audience through South Park: City Cast Denver says it was featured in the “Dikinbaus Hot Dogs” episode, and Explore Park County says Cartman is made to live in the stand there. A one-sixth-scale replica stands at Tiny Town in Morrison. The 2022 write-up described a small interior, benches outside by the creek, and a menu of hot dogs, chips, soda, popcorn and smoothies. City Cast Denver’s 2025 update said the stand was “very much open for business.” Westword’s listing says it is open only in summer months and advises checking social media for hours.
