FIELD GUIDE
The story
Visit Greater Grand Forks lists a six-foot-tall head, painted with wheat and a sunset, at its Visitors' Center on Gateway Drive. It describes the work as a planter of recycled metal and concrete, lists its installation as 2015, and credits the City of Grand Forks with commissioning the statue.
It was first a "blue head", repainted by local artist Billy Rerick. When it needed a refresh, the centre's marketing coordinator, Alicia Van Eps, painted it with her mother and aunt. They named the result Amber Waves-of-Grain, taking the wheat and sunset colours from "America the Beautiful" and adding red tractor earrings.
