FIELD GUIDE
The story
Cobumora is a brick-and-clay sculptural courtyard made in 1984 by British-born artist Andrew Leicester for Washington State University’s veterinary and pharmacology buildings in Pullman. According to its collection record, last updated September 2025, the Washington State Arts Commission (ArtsWA) holds it in the State Art Collection and gives its size as 16 feet 6 inches by 65 feet by 45 feet.
The title joins Cow, Bull, Mouse and Rat. ArtsWA’s description of the work says the courtyard suggests a bull’s skull from above; it describes a bench made of two cow halves, and Chiron the centaur holding two snakes referencing the Staff of Asclepius. Two black cats topped by five rats are described as guarding one entrance, and two dogs in an ancient Syrian style as guarding the west entrance.
