FIELD GUIDE
The story
Claes Oldenburg's Clothespin has stood at Fifteenth and Market Streets since the Bicentennial year, a 45-foot sculpture in Cor-Ten steel that Philadelphians took as their own.
Developer Jack Wolgin commissioned it in May 1974 for his Centre Square development, through the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority's Percent for Art programme, which requires that one percent of the budget for new construction or major renovation go to site-specific public art. The Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia says Wolgin's interest was sparked by an Oldenburg drawing on a 1972 exhibition poster. It describes the finished work as a 45-foot, 10-ton Cor-Ten steel sculpture and records that a crane lowered it onto its pedestal on 25 June 1976.
