The story

A 30-foot green alien leans out of a downtown parking garage in Covington, Kentucky, holding a magnifying glass to inspect the people on the pavement below. Clive was introduced in September 2023, according to the Northern Kentucky Tribune, by meetNKY, the studio AlloyFX and the City of Covington. He is one of a dozen installations from the city’s Quality of Place grant programme, which aims to “creatively enhance the physical appearance of the city’s business districts”; meetNKY provided extra funding for Clive. Marc Phelps, owner of AlloyFX, built him from white foam and fiberglass. Spectrum News 1 reported in 2024 that the work took seven months, that Phelps based the scale on “as big of a head as I could build in our garage”, and that he thought a magnifying glass “would be funny”. In 2023 meetNKY described Clive as perched across multiple floors of the garage, his head and hand emerging from the building. meetNKY’s backstory for him casts him as a Squizzle from the galaxy of Artalon who decided to stay and watch the city’s creative community. At the launch the Tribune said he would occupy the garage “for a limited time” and would eventually find a permanent perch on the Scott Street side. In December 2025 the City of Covington described him as perched on the side of the garage, and WBKR in March 2026 wrote that he peeks out from it. He can be seen from the street at Fifth and Scott.
