This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
"Clint the Cowboy," a large wooden cowboy figure standing outside F. McLintock's Saloon & Dining House in the Shell Beach area of Pismo Beach. Carved in 1983 from a diseased cypress tree by Filipino woodcarver Eusebio Dalay after the tree had to be removed, Clint became the steakhouse's signature roadside landmark alongside its neon sign on Highway 101. Over the decades storm and sun damage required repairs -- his hat, gun, and one arm and leg have been replaced with steel-and-styrofoam reproductions, and he has been repainted more than once. The restaurant that Clint stands in front of closed permanently in October 2024 after 51 years in business; as of the most recent local coverage the statue itself remained in place outside the now-shuttered building.
