FIELD GUIDE

The story

If you have driven along Route 309 in southern Lehigh County, WFMZ said in 2026, you have probably seen a giant pair of red pants. They belong to Chip, a fiberglass figure holding an ice cream scooper outside The Inside Scoop in Coopersburg.
Chip is a Muffler Man, one of the tall fiberglass figures that, according to the shop, International Fiberglass of California made by the thousand between the 1950s and 1970s for roadside businesses. The shop says its Muffler Man began in the 1960s at a gas station in Calgary and was found in a Canadian junkyard in 2017, destroyed. A fiberglass expert in Virginia pieced the fragments together and took a mould of the assembled figure, and the shop says that mould formed Chip. WFMZ credits Virginia artist Mark Cline with creating the statue, and reports that Chip made his debut at the shop in 2018. The shop gives the original as 20 feet tall, the Lehigh University alumni magazine described Chip as 20 feet in 2023, and WFMZ gives 25.
