FIELD GUIDE
The story
Above the shore of Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin's largest lake, a 12-foot statue of Red Bird stands high on a huge granite rock in High Cliff State Park, near Sherwood. The Wisconsin DNR calls it magnificent, and Calumet County Tourism describes it as a popular destination in the park.
The park takes its name from the limestone cliff of the Niagara Escarpment along the lake's eastern shore. It was dedicated as a state park in the summer of 1964 and, according to the DNR, is the only state-owned recreational area on Lake Winnebago. The statue predates the park's dedication. A photograph of the monument in the University of Wisconsin Digital Collections, from a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources collection, is dated about 1961. An inscription recorded by the Historical Marker Database reads "A Distinguished Wisconsin Indian in authentic tribal costume of 1827", credits the design to Adolphe E. Seebach, the erection to Sculpture House, New York, and the gift to the Banta Company Foundation, 1961.
