FIELD GUIDE

The story

The Oregon Coast Visitors Association's Reedsport guide (2017) describes a 30-foot cedar totem pole outside Reedsport's waterfront museum. The Umpqua Discovery Center is marked by a pole crafted by Chief Lelooska in 1962 and moved to the Center in 2000. The Center's website tells visitors to look for the totem pole when finding its building at 409 Riverfront Way, which can be reached from the street or from a boardwalk along the Umpqua River.
Inside, the Center describes exhibits that follow the area's history from the Kuuich Indians and early explorers such as Jedediah Smith to pioneer life in a tidewater town, with videos on early logging and a walk-through fish cannery, alongside a natural history exhibit. It also has a 35-foot periscope in its community room for a panoramic view of the waterfront.
