FIELD GUIDE

The story

A lighthouse stands in the Utah desert, far from any ship, and it is scheduled to come down. The red-and-white-striped tower in Cedar City is 88 feet tall and was built in 2000 as a focal point for the Providence Center shopping development beside Interstate 15. Southern Utah University says it is 450 miles from the nearest ocean, has never guided a ship and has no keeper.
The university's blog says developers claimed it was the tallest inland lighthouse in the United States when it went up. Rumours that it came from Europe or began as a church are, the operator's website says, untrue. The development's managing partner has said it was built to stand out, and the university reports his joking explanation that it would be ready if an earthquake ever dropped California into the ocean and left Cedar City on a new Pacific coast.
