FIELD GUIDE
The story
Visit Davis calls the Calico Cat an enormous mosaic piece that doubles as a shaded patio. It is at the John Natsoulas Gallery on 1st Street in downtown Davis.
The gallery's website dates the cat to 2016 and credits gallery founder John Natsoulas, Stephen Souza and a group of community members. It says the design was inspired by the calico cats that lived at 521 1st Street for decades; after finding a photograph of a cat from the early 1900s, from before the property became a gallery, Natsoulas wanted to honour the animals that had watched the building change. The Aggie reported in May 2016 that the sculpture was still unfinished and that the gallery was inviting anyone, skilled or not, to help on Saturday afternoons. Natsoulas told the paper the community projects were done at no cost to participants and that he was covering the costs. The Aggie described the concept as a tribute to his mentor, whereas the gallery's site links the cat to the gallery's own cats and credits the neighbouring Roy the Dog, built in 2015 from old records and other recycled materials, to Roy de Forest, who mentored Natsoulas.
