FIELD GUIDE
The story
Two concrete dinosaurs beside Interstate 10 began as advertising for a roadside cafe. Claude Bell, a lifelong artist who had built characters and installations for Knott’s Berry Farm, according to Palm Springs Life, opened the Wheel Inn in 1958 and began Dinny in 1964, according to Parade in October 2026. Glancer Magazine says he envisioned the dinosaurs as a way to attract travelers to the restaurant.
Palm Springs Life reported in 2024 that Dinny took Bell 11 years and $200,000 to build; Parade gave a reported cost of more than $250,000. The 150-foot-long, 45-foot-tall Apatosaurus is made of a steel mesh skeleton and sprayed concrete, and it concealed a gift shop and a small prehistoric exhibition space. It opened for business in 1975, when Bell was 78. Parade, citing CoachellaValley.com, said he used leftover materials from nearby Interstate 10 construction.
