FIELD GUIDE
The story
To reach the washing machines in Dubois, Wyoming, you walk through the nasal passage of a giant skull. American Coin-Op described it in 2018 as a once-in-a-lifetime way to get to the machines, and the entrance is still in use as a doorway into a working laundromat and car wash.
The fiberglass skull stands 15 feet tall. According to Cowboy State Daily in 2025, it was made by the late artist Vic Lemmon, who signed it in 1982 to add some flair to his business, the Grub ’n Tub, a combination coin-operated laundromat and restaurant. American Coin-Op reported in 2018 that when he moved the operation across the road to enlarge the laundry, the skull was moved with the machinery.
