FIELD GUIDE
The story
Enterprise, Alabama, put up a monument to the insect that wrecked its cotton crop, and the inscription thanks it. The Encyclopedia of Alabama, published by Auburn University, calls it the only memorial honouring an insect.
The boll weevil reached Alabama around 1910 and soon decimated cotton harvests. Farmers took the advice of agricultural scientists such as Tuskegee Institute's George Washington Carver and planted peanuts, sweet potatoes and soybeans. According to the Encyclopedia, Coffee County rebounded in 1917 with the largest peanut harvest in the nation.
