FIELD GUIDE

The story

Bird's Farm outside Forkland, Alabama, is a roadside field of hay-bale and scrap-metal sculptures made by the late Jim Bird, whose best-known work was a 32-foot Tin Man.
According to SPACES Archives, artist Jim Bird, who died in 2023, began making sculptures from hay and metal in 1993, intending "something for bored drivers to look at". The archive says there have been more than 80 creations over the years, among them a caterpillar, reindeer, a ship, a railroad engine, an alarm clock and a spider. Three posts with cut-out letters spelling "Acta Non Verba" were the first sign that drivers should slow down.
