FIELD GUIDE
The story
The sign says Yellow Belly Country, and there is a large yellowbelly mounted above it on Wills Street.
Golden perch – yellowbelly to everyone who fishes for them – are the great inland freshwater target of the Murray-Darling system, and the Warrego River at Charleville is yellowbelly water. The species is deep-bodied, golden-flanked and a strong fighter, and it holds a place in western Queensland fishing culture comparable to trout in the southern highlands.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Charlie the Big Yellowbelly remains a prominent Wills Street landmark. A 2025 Queensland tourism photograph shows the fish at the Wills Street / Alfred Street corner opposite the Charleville Hotel. Independent directory evidence places the former Target Country premises at 6 Wills Street, and the 11 September 2026 Land of the Bigs reference independently maps Charlie at approximately -26.401695, 146.239995 on that same corner. A competing specialist checklist gives 11 Wills Street, but the streetscape and address evidence favour the 6 Wills Street corner.
ACCESS
Charlie the Big Yellowbelly is at the Wills Street / Alfred Street corner. Murweh Shire current visitor material confirms a public carpark on Wills Street, and Council has documented formal CBD parking on Wills Street. PBT still withholds direct navigation until the preferred exact parking point for Charlie is independently map-checked; do not stop in the traffic lane or treat the sculpture/site coordinate as a vehicle destination.
