The Big XXXX Beer Can

The method puts it in the painted-infrastructure branch of the tradition, which this catalogue has found to be considerably larger than it looks: the grain silo at Marrickville painted as a can of pale ale, the water-purification building at Mourquong painted as a wine cask, the eleven-metre tower at Club Kotara reskinned as a beer can in 2026, the tobacco-plant chimney at Myrtleford painted as a cigarette. All of them take an existing structure and repaint it rather than fabricating something new.

It is the cheapest way into the tradition and increasingly the most common. A tank is already a cylinder; a can is a cylinder; the only work is the livery.

XXXX is the Queensland beer, brewed in Brisbane since the nineteenth century and carrying a state identity that no other Australian brand quite matches. A giant one at a pub on the Bruce Highway route south of Mackay is about as locally legible as advertising gets.

Koumala is a small sugar-country settlement, and the pub is essentially the town.
