The story
The Hunter Valley is Australia's oldest continuously producing wine region, with vines planted from the 1820s, and Pokolbin is close to its centre. A seven-metre wine bottle is therefore about the least surprising object in New South Wales.
What makes this one worth a look is the detail that the neck traditionally incorporates a chimney. That is a very particular kind of thinking, and it belongs to a whole class of Australian Big Things that are also buildings – structures doing a practical job while pretending to be an enormous consumer product. A bottle that is genuinely a bottle is a sculpture; a bottle venting smoke through its neck is architecture with a sense of humour.
It stands in the Hunter Valley Gardens Shopping Village on Broke Road, and the distinction matters: the Shopping Village is a separate precinct from the display gardens next door. The bottle is in the village, not behind the gate.
The wider Hunter Valley Gardens precinct has been reworked considerably over the years, and the bottle has outlasted a good deal of it. It is photographed in place as far back as January 2008 and is confirmed still present in 2026 reporting.
Who built it, and in what year, is not established in the record.
Some context on the region helps explain why the bottle sits where it does. The Hunter Valley Gardens precinct was developed as a large-scale visitor complex rather than as a winery, and Pokolbin's economy has shifted over recent decades from primarily growing and making wine towards hosting the people who come to drink it. The village now carries restaurants, accommodation, gardens and event venues alongside the cellar doors.
A giant bottle at a shopping village rather than at a winery gate is a precise reflection of that shift. It advertises the experience of the wine region, not a particular vineyard's product.

A current 2026 article confirms the Big Wine Bottle remains at the Hunter Valley Gardens precinct. The Shopping Village is currently active at 2090 Broke Road with plentiful parking and easy access, and the bottle sits in the village rather than inside the separately ticketed display gardens.
ACCESS
Navigate to Hunter Valley Gardens Shopping Village at 2090 Broke Road and use the free onsite visitor parking. The Big Wine Bottle is in the shopping-village precinct, so a paid garden ticket is not required simply to see the exterior landmark.
