FIELD GUIDE
The story
A giant whiting at a historical village museum, which is a more modest fish than a coastal town would usually choose.
That modesty is the interesting part. Hervey Bay could have picked a marlin, a shark or a humpback – it already has the humpback, in Nala the eight-metre breaching whale beside the regional gallery. Instead this one enlarges a whiting: a small, plain, sandy-coloured fish that nobody photographs and everybody eats.
