FIELD GUIDE
The story
A giant purple tap floating in mid-air, pouring water into nothing, with no visible support.
The illusion is the whole object. The tap at A Maze'N Things on Phillip Island appears to hang unsupported, and the trick – as with every version of this worldwide – is that the water column itself is the structure, with a pipe concealed inside the falling stream. It only works from the right angles, which is why getting close enough to see it properly is part of the experience.
That makes it an unusual entry. Nearly every object in this catalogue is impressive because it is large. This one is impressive because it appears impossible, and the size is secondary.
One genuinely useful piece of practical information sits in the record. The tap is visible from Phillip Island Road without paying entry, so a photograph from the road is free; but seeing the illusion work properly requires admission to A Maze'N Things, around twenty-six dollars for an adult and twenty for a child as of 2025, with a full visit taking two to three hours.
That distinction – free from the road, paid to appreciate – applies to a surprising number of objects in this collection and is almost never stated.
Phillip Island receives around 3.5 million visitors a year, most of them for the Penguin Parade, making it one of Australia's most-visited destinations. A Maze'N Things is five minutes from Cowes on the main road across the island.
The decade it belongs to, any attribution and the dimensions: unknown.
