FIELD GUIDE

The story

Ōakura sits on Surf Highway 45, the coast road that runs around the base of Taranaki maunga, and the name of the road is not a tourism invention. This stretch of Taranaki coast produces consistent surf from several directions because the mountain pushes the land out into the Tasman Sea, giving the region beaches that work in almost any swell. Ōakura Beach is one of the most used of them.
The giant surfboard is that town stating the obvious at scale. It is roadside advertising for a place rather than a business – an object that tells drivers on the highway what Ōakura is for before they have seen the water.

WHAT TO EXPECT
South Taranaki District Council meeting material in 2021 explicitly referred to the Big Surfboard already in place at Ōakura, using it as a comparison for a proposed Opunake landmark. Current New Zealand Big Things lists continue to include it.
ACCESS
The eight-metre board is documented outside Vertigo Surf Shop. Current local sources place Vertigo with the Oakura Board Riders premises on Tasman Parade; route to the surf-shop/club precinct rather than treating the board itself as a roadside stopping point.
