FIELD GUIDE
The story
A giant seated storyteller outside a pub on the Kiewa Valley Highway, which is a subject nobody else in this catalogue has attempted.
The figure sits at the Dederang Hotel, and a geotagged licensed photograph from March 2024 confirms it remains there, with specialist census sources independently placing it at 4326 Kiewa Valley Highway.
What makes it unusual is the abstraction. Almost every oversized human figure in this collection depicts an occupation – a miner, a stockman, a shearer, a farmer, a soldier. A storyteller is not a trade; it is a role, and one that in a country pub is filled by whoever is at the bar. Putting a monument to it outside a hotel is a joke about the institution itself: this is where the stories happen, and here is the person telling them.
Seated is the right posture too. A standing figure is a monument. A seated one is a person, at rest, mid-anecdote, and considerably more approachable at scale.
Dederang is a small settlement in the Kiewa Valley in north-east Victoria, between Wodonga and Mount Beauty, in high country grazing and hop-growing land below the alps. The valley road carries steady traffic toward Falls Creek and the Bogong High Plains, so the pub sits on a genuine touring route.
A hotel in a settlement this size that commissions a sculpture at all is doing something notable.
The file is empty on its size.
