Mossburn’s giant stag stands beside the route to Fiordland as an oversized tribute to the district’s long association with deer and deer farming.

FIELD GUIDE
The story
Mossburn calls itself the venison capital of the world, and it has put up a stag on the highway to say so.
The claim is less far-fetched than it sounds. New Zealand effectively invented commercial deer farming, and it did so in this district: the country's first deer farm was established near Mossburn in 1972, and a game-processing works had already been running here since 1962. For a township of this size on the road to Te Anau and Milford Sound, that is a genuinely unusual industrial history, and the stag is the shorthand for it.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Great South continues to promote the Giant Mossburn Stag as a current landmark. Southland District Council’s reserve-management plan explicitly lists the deer statue as a facility within Mossburn War Memorial Park, resolving the apparent 78 Devon Street versus Holmes Street conflict: the statue is a main-road-edge feature of the public reserve, not a separate private site.
ACCESS
Navigate to the mapped daytime stadium parking within Mossburn War Memorial Park at approximately -45.6692, 168.2330 and approach the Giant Stag within the reserve. Southland District Council manages the park for public recreation, and independent parking mapping confirms this point as the town stadium/daytime parking. Overnight camping is prohibited; follow current local signage.
