FIELD GUIDE
The story
There is a giant spanner in the Sapphire Gemfields, and no obvious reason for it – which in a district full of small-scale miners is arguably reason enough.
It was built in 1982, painted yellow and black, and it stands in Sapphire, one of the settlements strung through the Central Queensland gemfields around Anakie and Rubyvale. The current regional visitor guide still promotes it as one of the town's quirky photo stops.
The subject makes more sense here than a first glance suggests. Fossicking and small-claim sapphire mining is machinery work – pumps, sieves, wash plants, elevators and endlessly failing second-hand equipment – and a spanner is the tool that keeps all of it running. In a district where everybody is fixing something, an oversized spanner is a shared joke rather than a random object.
It also belongs to a specific and appealing subgenre: the giant hand tool. Australia has produced several, and they are consistently the most abstract objects in the tradition, since they commemorate work rather than produce. Nobody visits a district because of its spanners.
The gemfields are unusual country generally – a scatter of small settlements, fossicking claims, caravan parks and open ground where anyone can buy a permit and dig. The Big Sapphire down the road at Anakie makes the obvious statement about what comes out of the ground. The spanner is about the work of getting it out.
Its maker and dimensions are not recorded.
Forty-plus years is a long run for an object with no business obviously attached to it and no council obviously maintaining it. That it is still being promoted in the current visitor guide suggests somebody has been quietly looking after it.
