FIELD GUIDE

The story

The Big Soldier stood outside Hassett's Military Museum on Bridge Street, a giant Digger keeping watch over the New England Highway through Uralla.
A soldier is not an ordinary Big Thing subject. Most oversized objects are cheerful and commercial; this one sat at the boundary between roadside attraction and memorial, advertising a private military museum while depicting a figure that, at any other scale and in any other posture, would be a war memorial. That ambiguity is common to the handful of giant Diggers around the country, and it makes them awkward objects to write about – the slouch hat carries weight regardless of what the sculpture was built for.
