FIELD GUIDE
The story
A giant shovel near the Hume Freeway exit at Chiltern, and the record is careful about exactly where.
Recent April 2024 field reporting documents a stop at the Big Shovel, and current Victorian Big Things coverage places the artwork just north of the freeway exit. The record explicitly declines to infer an exact object coordinate or a safest stopping point – which is the right call for an object beside a freeway, where guessing a pull-in is a genuine safety matter rather than a mapping nicety.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Recent April 2024 field reporting documents a stop at the Big Shovel in Chiltern, while current Victorian Big Things coverage continues to place the artwork just north of the Hume Freeway exit. The exact object coordinate and safest stopping point have deliberately not been inferred.
ACCESS
The Big Miners Spade is a current public landmark at Chiltern’s southern entrance. Chiltern has established public parking at the Visitor Information Centre/Main Street and accessible parking at the railway station, but PBT has not verified a continuous safe pedestrian approach from those locations to the sculpture, nor a formed public stopping bay at the sculpture itself. Nearby motel parking is private and must not be substituted. Direct navigation remains withheld.
