FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Big Shell outlasted the shop it was built for, then the shop's replacement, and finally ended up in the front yard of somebody's house – where people kept turning up to photograph it anyway.
It went up in the 1960s, about three metres tall, to draw customers into the Big Shell shop on Gympie Terrace, which sold shells. Tewantin was then building a small industry out of novelty attractions; the House of Bottles nearby held a collection of five thousand bottles, some up to two thousand years old.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The Big Shell was a long-running Tewantin landmark and shell-shop entrance dating from the 1960s. Sunshine Coast News reported in 2025 that it survived several ownership changes but was removed after the property changed hands again about four years earlier; specialist documentation identifies the removal during 2021 renovations.
ACCESS
