The story

A shell you sit on, at the point where the ferry lets everybody out.

A 2025 University of Georgia field itinerary uses the big shell statue outside Manly Wharf as a meeting landmark, and independent Big Things and public-art coverage identifies the same shell-form sculpture near West Esplanade.

That first source is a better piece of evidence than it looks. An academic field programme choosing an object as the place where a group will gather is proof the thing is unmistakable, findable and permanent – the practical test a landmark actually has to pass. Tourism copy asserts significance; a meeting point demonstrates it.

The dual function is what distinguishes it. Almost everything in this catalogue is meant to be looked at from outside; a very small group is meant to be used, and the shell is furniture as well as sculpture. That places it with Morty the snail at Queanbeyan and the walk-through twine horse at Scone rather than with the roadside monuments.

A shell is also the correct object for the site in a way that requires no explanation. Manly Cove is a harbour beach, the wharf sits on sand, and shells are simply what is underfoot. There is no industry being advertised and no local product being claimed – just an enlargement of something already present.

Manly is one of the most heavily visited places in Sydney, and an object there is seen by numbers no country highway can approach.
