The story
Three hundred and twenty-one sheep, with hand shears, in seven hours and forty minutes. The record still stands.
John Robert Howe – Jackie Howe – was born at Canning Downs near Warwick on 26 July 1861. In 1892 two gold medals were offered to find Australia's fastest shearer, and Howe shore 321 sheep by blade in a single day. He had already taken the record for the most sheep shorn in seven days: 1,437, in 44 hours and 30 minutes.
