FIELD GUIDE
The story
The ball went up for a Rugby World Cup, and it stayed.
Katikati's oversized rugby ball was erected during the World Cup era, when towns across New Zealand were decorating themselves for an event the whole country was hosting, and a great many of those decorations came down within months. This one did not. It was later relocated to Moore Park, refurbished after damage, and has become a conspicuous symbol of the town's rugby community rather than a leftover from a tournament.
