The story

The service station trades as Shell Big Pineapple, which settles any question about whether the landmark still matters.

A business naming itself after the object out the front is the strongest evidence available that the object has become the address. This catalogue has seen it before – the Big Apple complex at Spreyton, the Big Flower Super Nursery at Ourimbah, the Rabbit Trap Hotel at Albert – and it consistently marks the point where a sign stops advertising a business and starts identifying a place.

The pineapple at the River Street site in West Ballina is smaller than the famous Queensland one at Woombye, and unmistakably oversized nonetheless.

Pineapples are a genuine northern New South Wales crop as well as a Queensland one, and the Ballina district's subtropical coast grows them alongside macadamias, avocados and bananas. The Big Prawn is up the same road, at 507 River Street – nine metres, thirty-five tonnes, nearly demolished in 2009 and saved by the hardware store next door.

So West Ballina has a giant prawn and a giant pineapple on the same street, which for a suburb of a town of twenty-odd thousand is a considerable density.

River Street is the main road into Ballina from the highway, so both objects catch the same traffic.

The installation date, the builder and any figures for its size are absent from every source located.
