FIELD GUIDE
The story
A giant peanut on the Kennedy Highway, marking a crop that the Atherton Tablelands used to be built on.
Peanuts were a major Tablelands industry for most of the twentieth century. The volcanic red soils around Tolga, Atherton and Mareeba grew them in quantity, the Peanut Marketing Board operated here, and the Tolga silos are still a landmark. Production has since shifted and diversified, but the district's association with the crop is genuine and long.
The Peanut Place, which the object stands outside, sells the product directly – the roadside stall model that persists on the Tablelands more than almost anywhere else in Queensland, because the tourist traffic between Cairns and the tablelands towns is constant and the growing season is long.
This is the catalogue's fourth peanut object and the only one outside the South Burnett. Kingaroy holds the crowd-funded scrap-metal peanut in Lions Park and the three concrete Peanut Marketing Board silos on Haly Street built between 1938 and 1951; Booie has the chainsaw-carved pair commissioned by the Crumpton family. That two separate Queensland districts, six hundred kilometres apart, each built peanut monuments is a good measure of how completely the crop defined both.
The Tablelands version is the least documented of the four – a commercial forecourt object with no recorded maker and no artist credit, which is the normal condition for objects of its kind.
Tolga sits just north of Atherton, and the highway through it carries most of the traffic climbing from the coast.
Nothing available settles the maker, the size or the year.

The former Peanut Place has closed, but the Big Peanut remains in active visitor use at the same Tolga site. Eventide Hills Distillery now operates from the property and uses the Big Peanut itself as the landmark in its visitor directions.
ACCESS
The Big Peanut now marks the operating Eventide Hills Distillery at 2–10 Arbouin Road. The distillery door welcomes visitors during published opening hours and explicitly tells arriving visitors to look for the Big Peanut. Navigate to the venue and use normal onsite visitor parking rather than stopping on the Kennedy Highway.
Current operator at the former Peanut Place site advertises its distillery door as open to visitors at 2–10 Arbouin Road and explicitly directs visitors to “Look for the Big Peanut”.
Current venue listing links its driving directions to -17.2027431, 145.4761638 at the operating distillery. Used for the venue arrival point, not as a claimed Peanut centroid.
