The Big Superb Parrot

Superb parrots are the right choice and a pointed one. They are a threatened species, listed nationally, breeding in river red gum and box woodland along the Murray and the Murrumbidgee – exactly the country Strathmerton sits in. Most of their remaining habitat is on private land and roadside remnants, which makes them a bird whose survival depends on farming districts like this one paying attention.

So a community-built sculpture of a threatened local bird, outside the town's visitor information point, is doing something more deliberate than decoration. It is the same instinct as the Bremer Bay snail: use the oversized object to make people notice a species they would otherwise drive past.

The males are spectacular – bright green with a yellow throat and a red band across it – and they are fast, high fliers, usually heard before they are seen.
