FIELD GUIDE
The story
Alex Seton carved a cardboard parcel out of marble, complete with the creases and dents of a long journey.
Sculpture No. 23 sits in Civic, and the ACT Public Art List describes exactly that illusion: a package rendered in stone, carrying the soft damage that a real parcel accumulates in transit. Seton is among Australia's most accomplished marble carvers and has built a career on this kind of trompe-l'œil – folded fabric, inflatable boats, hoodies, life jackets – all in a material that has meant permanence and seriousness for two and a half thousand years.
