FIELD GUIDE
The story
Mud crabs are the reason people pull off the Bruce Highway at Cardwell, and the town has a giant one to say so.
The sculpture is believed to have been built around 1986, though that date is not firmly established and no maker is recorded. What is certain is the subject's standing. The mud crab is the premier eating crab of tropical Australia, taken from the mangrove creeks and estuaries along this coast, and Cardwell sits on the shore of Rockingham Bay looking across to Hinchinbrook Island – one of the great mangrove systems in the country and prime crabbing ground.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Current-status evidence is good but relies partly on recent community reporting, so a fresh operator or field confirmation remains desirable.
ACCESS
The Big Mud Crab is associated with the operating Seaview Deli Cafe / BP service-station site at 87 Victoria Street, Cardwell. The stored point is a map-checked host-site reference rather than a surveyed crab centroid or parking bay. Navigate to the operating cafe/service-station site and use normal lawful customer parking.
