FIELD GUIDE

The story

The magpie on the clubhouse roof at Gary Larson Oval has a name. Locally he is Owe'e, and he is the mascot of the Miriam Vale Magpies.
At roughly two metres high, sitting in an oversized nest, he is modest by Big Things standards – but he is doing something most of them do not. This is not an advertisement for a business or a bid for passing tourist traffic. It is a club emblem, made large and put on the roof of the building the club plays out of, which makes it closer in spirit to a coat of arms than to a giant pineapple.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Known as Owe’e, the oversized magpie is the mascot of the Miriam Vale Magpies rugby league club and a recognisable town Big Thing. Recent 2025 travel photography confirms the bird and nest remain on the clubhouse roof, while current council records confirm Gary Larson Oval remains an active community sporting site.
ACCESS
Navigate to Gary Larson Oval in Larson Street, Miriam Vale. Use lawful sporting-ground access/parking and view the roof-mounted sculpture from public or club-accessible areas; do not climb structures or enter closed facilities simply for a photograph.
