The story
Yummylicious Candy Shack claims the largest freestanding lollipop in the world, and current local tourism material repeats it.
The giant rainbow lollipop stands outside the shop in Ravensthorpe, and the business remains active in 2026.
The claim is unverifiable and entirely in keeping with the tradition. Freestanding is doing careful work in that phrasing – it excludes anything mounted on a wall or a building, which is precisely the sort of qualification a superlative acquires when somebody has thought about it.
A rainbow swirl lollipop is a good subject for enlargement. The spiral is the whole visual identity of the object, it works at any scale, and the colours are pure saturated bands that read from a great distance. It is also, unlike most food subjects, already a manufactured object with a designed appearance rather than a natural form somebody has to render convincingly.
Ravensthorpe sits on the South Coast Highway in Western Australia's Great Southern, roughly midway between Esperance and Albany, in wheatbelt and mining country at the edge of the Fitzgerald River National Park – one of the most botanically significant reserves on earth.
A candy shop in a town that size is an unlikely business, and a giant lollipop outside it is exactly the right way to make a long empty highway stop.
The maker, its scale and the date were left unrecorded.
