FIELD GUIDE

The story

An 18-foot fiberglass coal miner has watched over Main Street in Helper, Utah, since the 1960s, put there by a railroad and coal town that decided it needed an attraction.
According to Carbon County's visitor site, Mayor Chris Jouflas and the City Council decided in 1964 that Helper needed an attraction to honor its mining history. The city ordered a coal miner statue, and the community named him Big John after the Jimmy Dean song "Big Bad John", which Utah Stories dates to 1961. The county says the statue represents miners who lost their lives, and Emerging Horizons, a travel guide for wheelchair users, calls it an unofficial memorial to them.
