FIELD GUIDE
The story
You can sleep inside a six-ton potato in Idaho, and the Idaho Potato Commission, which owned it first, calls it "the only potato hotel in the world."
The giant spud began as a promotional prop. The commission says it was created in 2012 to celebrate its 75th anniversary, is made of steel, plaster and concrete, and measures 28 feet long, 12 feet wide and 11.5 feet tall. Bolted to a flatbed trailer, it travelled the country for seven years; Islands magazine adds that it visited 48 states. It was built for a one-year tour, the commission says, and held out far longer.
