FIELD GUIDE
The story
There is a second hand protruding from the index finger of the Big Hand, and once you know that the whole thing makes sense.
The giant red sculpture stands in the front yard of the Central Second Hand Shop in Alice Springs, and it is a visual pun executed with real commitment. A hand, with a second hand growing out of it: second-hand shop. It is the kind of joke that would be unbearable in words and is genuinely delightful in three-dimensional fibreglass.
The red is doing practical work as well. Alice Springs sits in country whose defining colour is red – the ranges, the soil, the light – and a red sculpture would ordinarily disappear into that. This one does not, because it is a saturated manufactured red against a landscape of dusty ochre, and specialist coverage notes it can be seen from a distance.
Second-hand shops are also a genuinely important institution in remote towns, where freight costs make new goods expensive and the nearest alternative retail may be a long way away.
Current 2026 specialist Big Things material still identifies the sculpture at the shop, and earlier public art documentation records the same object and business.
It belongs to the best category of commercial Big Thing: not merely large, but constructed around an idea that rewards a second look. Most roadside objects are the product enlarged. This one is a pun you have to walk up to in order to get.
Nobody wrote down a named maker, its proportions and a date.
