The story
An oversized golf ball marks Spring Valley Golf Club on Heatherton Road, which is about the least ambiguous signage a golf club could commission.
The club is not a novelty operation. It opened in 1948, is held in high regard among Australian courses, and was recently rated by Golf Australia magazine as the forty-fifth best course in the country and among the top ten in metropolitan Melbourne. That matters to how the object reads: this is not a mini-golf attraction using a giant ball as a gimmick but a serious championship-standard club using one as a gate marker.
Clayton South sits in Melbourne's south-east, in the sandbelt – the strip of sandy soil running through Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs that produced an extraordinary concentration of the best golf courses in Australia. Sandy ground drains fast and shapes well, and the courses built on it from the 1920s onward are internationally significant. A golf ball on a pole here is standing in territory where golf genuinely matters.
The object itself is documented by a licensed photograph and appears in recent Victorian Big Things surveys, and the club remains active at 619 Heatherton Road.
Because it is on private club grounds, the record uses site-level rather than object coordinates and treats access as restricted.
Who made the ball, when it went up and how large it is are not recorded – which is a common gap for objects belonging to private clubs, where nothing is ever minuted for the public.
Golf clubs are quietly among the larger holders of oversized objects in Australia, and almost none of them are catalogued. The sport's own signage tradition – balls, tees, clubs at scale – has never been treated as part of the Big Things story.
