FIELD GUIDE

The story

The Golden Eagle was found near Larkinville in 1931, by the sixteen-year-old son of a prospector. It was the largest gold nugget recorded in Western Australia and one of the largest ever found in Australia, and it got its name from a rough resemblance to a bird in flight, the diameter reading as outspread wings.
It no longer exists. The nugget was sold to the state government for £5,438 and melted down to raise funds – an entirely rational decision in 1931, in the depths of the Depression, and a slightly heartbreaking one from any other angle. The most remarkable object ever pulled out of the Western Australian goldfields lasted a matter of months as an object.
